Sinkholes located on county soil survey reports are located in this
coverage. Sinkholes are only included which are mapped on county soil
surveys. Sinkholes were identified on soil survey maps, hand transfered to
1:250,000 or 1:100,000 maps and digitized from the paper maps.
Purpose:
This digital, geographically referenced data set was developed by the
Iowa Department of Natural Resources to carry out agency responsibilities
related to management, protection, and development of Iowa's natural
resources.
Supplemental_Information:
This coverage could be improved and updated using digital soil survey
data when it becomes available in a commonly recognized GIS format. Some
sinkholes are known by DNR/GSB staff but are not included in this coverage
because they were not mapped by SCS soil mapping staff. Sinkholes in the
following counties were identified on county soil maps, transferred to
1:250,000 maps, and digitized: Allamakee, Bremer, Clayton, Clinton,
Fayette, Howard, Mitchell, and Winneshiek. These were all compiled
originally for the report, Sinkholes, Hydrogeology, and Ground- water
Quality in Northeast Iowa. Sinkholes in the following counties were
identified on county soil maps, transferred to 1:100,000 maps, and
digitized: Butler, Chickasaw, Delaware, Des Moines, Dubuque, Floyd,
Franklin, Jackson, Jones, Linn, and Worth.
