Description:
Abstract:
This coverage contains polygons representing soil mapping units from the published soil survey report of Allamakee, Clayton, and Winneshiek County.  The soil survey was digitized by the Iowa Cooperative Soil Survey (ICSS), which includes the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, and Iowa State University, Cooperative Extension Service and Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station. The soil mapping units are linked to the Iowa Soil Properties and Interpretations Database (ISPAID).  Minimum size delineation of soil polygons is 2 acres.  This coverage in its present form, including the township edge-matching, final editing and finishing was assembled by the Iowa DNR, Geological Survey.
Purpose:
This digital, geographically referenced data set was developed by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to carry out agency responsibilities related to management, protection, and development of Iowa's natural resources.

The township-level data was appended to county-level & projected to UTM Zone 15 NAD83 and converted to ESRI Shapefile format by USDA-NRCS GIS Office, Ames, IA

The spatial accuracy of this coverage is not known, but has been estimated based on several known factors and some assumptions about its processing history. The actual on ground transition between map units is variable: on long gently sloping landscapes the transition may occur gradually over 18 meters (50 feet) or more; on steep slopes it may change sharply, 2 meters (5 feet) or less. Based on a maximum local relief per section in Clayton County of around 135 meters, the terrain distortions caused by using non-orthorectified aerial imagery can contribute up to 100 meters of displacement. Georeferencing and transformation to the UTM coordinate system is accurate to 22 meters. Using a root mean squared (RMS) error calculation, the worse case positional accuracy of this coverage is estimated to be around 104 meters ((18**2 + 100**2 + 22**2)**1/2). Displacement of soil polygons is evident in drainage ways of sections with steep, variable relief. Users should be aware of these accuracy issues particularly when overlaying soils data with higher quality data.

- 1:15,840 scale mylar map sheets scanned with Optronics camera at 200 DPI (ground resolution 2 meters).  Map sheets were originally drawn on black and white rectified aerial photos.  These aerial photos were not ortho rectified and thus soil lines contain terrain distortions inherited from the imagery. 
- edited with MES (Map Editing Software - Univ. of Minnesota), completed  2/28/91
- soil polygons were clipped to individual sections having a raster resolution of 320 x 200 pixels (typical ground resolution 5 x 8 meters)
- raster to vector conversion (ISOIL format)
- conversion to Arc/Info format
- soil data transformed to UTM coordinate system using registration tic files from Iowa DNR NRGIS county public land survey system (PLSS) files.  PLSS coverages were digitized from 24k USGS topo maps and have 22 meter RMS accuracy.
- individual sections of soil polygon data were joined into townships using Arc macro language scripts (soilprog2.aml and soilmatch.aml).  Section boundaries of soil polygons were snapped (30 meter search tolerance) to IDNR PLSS coverages using Arc/Info ADJUST command.  Outer 50 meters of soil coverage warped to fit section lines.  Macro developed by Calvin Wolter and Jim Giglierano, Iowa DNR.  Processed by GIS Support and Research Lab, Iowa State University.
